On April 10, 2023, the fourth session of the Tianjin Metal Materials Industry Association’s “Young Managers’ Salon,” themed “Upgrading and Transformation of Manufacturing Enterprises,” was held at Tianjin Haigang Steel Coil. Notably, renowned domestic management scholars—Professors Wang Yingjun and Yang Bin, both from the School of Business at Nankai University and doctoral supervisors, as well as Associate Professor Cui Lianguang—were specially invited to deliver keynote speeches, engage in in-depth discussions with participants, and jointly explore new approaches to the upgrading and transformation of manufacturing enterprises.

The Tianjin Metal Association invited young managers and corporate leaders from companies including Baolai Steel, Daqiang Steel, Zhaolida, Hangang International Trade, Chuanghui Metals, Zhuoli International, Zhonglian Shengheng, Jialiang Logistics, Boyu Steel Pipe, Baoli Jin, Fushundeh, Lianzhong Steel Pipe, Tengfei Steel Pipe, Wandekai, Kexinda, Yixunyuan, Huodacheng, Zhengde Yuan, and Zhenghui Tianchen, as well as leaders from Tianjin Huatang Sewing Machine, Dote Consulting, Jintong Hongze, Baosheng Commerce, and Ti’aisi.

This salon was chaired by Vice President Yu Maosong. Yu Maosong began by expressing his heartfelt gratitude to all the leaders and professors for their strong support of this event, and warmly welcomed the many young managers who had come to Haigang Steel to listen together to experts’ insights and discuss the upgrading and transformation of manufacturing enterprises. Yu Maosong pointed out that this salon would explore topics including strategy, the digital economy, and the development of manufacturing enterprises. He emphasized that during their daily production and operations, each enterprise should regularly reflect on and deepen its understanding of its strategy, clearly distinguish between the real and the virtual aspects of the digital economy, and firmly grasp the right direction for their enterprise’s development. He hoped that these young managers would gain valuable insights from the salon activities and continue to grow through ongoing learning and exchange.

During the event, Ma Shuchen, Executive Vice President of the Tianjin Metal Association, delivered the opening remarks. He expressed gratitude to the leaders and professors from Tianjin Haigang Steel and the School of Business at Nankai University for their strong support of this salon event, as well as to Yu Maosong, the salon mentor, Vice President of the Association, and Chairman of Haigang Steel, for his meticulous planning and guidance of the event. Ma Shuchen pointed out that we are currently in spring—a season symbolizing vibrant vitality and heralding hope and growth. This reflects the Tianjin Metal Association’s expectations for the many young managers. Today’s salon event has attracted even more young managers and business leaders, demonstrating the younger generation and corporate executives’ eagerness to learn and continuously enhance their capabilities through various means, thereby jointly promoting the positive and healthy development of both their enterprises and the industry. The Tianjin Metal Association will continue to organize learning-oriented salons to help young managers accelerate their professional growth.

Professor Wang Yingjun, a professor at the School of Business at Nankai University and doctoral supervisor, delivered the keynote speech titled “Strategic Awareness and Action.” In his presentation, Professor Wang Yingjun provided an interpretation of strategic thinking and strategic awareness by examining common types of strategies, strategic decision-making and strategic awareness in practice, as well as the relationship between strategic awareness and change. Through a thorough analysis, he helped participants recognize that strategic awareness encompasses competitive awareness, problem awareness, creative awareness, learning awareness, and action awareness, guiding them to rethink strategy in an ever-changing environment.

Professor Yang Bin, a professor at the Nankai University Business School and doctoral supervisor, delivered a keynote speech titled “The Virtual and Real Aspects of the Digital Economy.” Using engaging and humorous language, Professor Yang explored topics including the popular concept of the digital economy and the Gartner Hype Cycle; the distinctions among data, information, and knowledge; the essence of the digital economy; the consequences of data misuse; what constitutes an effective traffic pool; and why finance is always context-dependent. Through his insightful analysis, Professor Yang demystified the virtual and real dimensions behind the digital economy, shed light on its development trends, and guided enterprises on how to align their strategies with their own realities, gain a clear understanding of the digital economy’s true nature, remain vigilant about potential risks, and make the most of its opportunities.

Associate Professor Cui Liangguang from the School of Business at Nankai University delivered a keynote speech titled “Reflections on the Servitization and Solutions for Manufacturing Enterprises.” In his speech, Professor Cui Liangguang outlined the background behind the servitization transformation of manufacturing enterprises, defined what solutions are, and described the key characteristics of such solutions. He also provided a detailed explanation of the servitization transformation process in manufacturing from a business model perspective. Drawing on case studies such as Rolls-Royce’s aircraft engines and Weimeng Group, Professor Cui offered an in-depth analysis of the creation and development of smart factories, guiding participants to engage in more profound reflection on both the concepts and practices of servitization in manufacturing enterprises.

During the interactive exchange session, participants engaged in discussions and exchanges with experts, drawing on their own companies’ actual development experiences to explore topics such as corporate strategy, digital transformation, and the transformation of manufacturing enterprises.

In 2020, the Tianjin Metal Association established the “Young Managers’ Salon” to encourage more young managers to keep learning and enhancing their understanding. Under the guidance and mentorship of the association’s leaders and salon mentors, the salon’s membership has continued to grow. More young managers from various enterprises have benefited from the salon activities by strengthening communication and rapidly improving their skills. The association will also continue to organize a series of events, using diverse approaches to further support the rapid growth of young managers.
