Fun Facts About Galvanized Strip Steel

What kind of strip steel is referred to as galvanized strip steel? Simply put, it’s strip steel whose surface is coated with a layer of metallic zinc to prevent surface corrosion caused by external factors and thereby extend the service life of the strip steel.

Galvanized strip steel, depending on the differences in its production and processing methods, can be classified into the following types:

  (1) Hot-dip galvanized strip steel: This type of strip steel is produced by immersing the strip steel into a bath containing molten zinc, allowing the zinc to adhere to the surface of the strip steel. Currently, most manufacturers employ an uninterrupted hot-dip galvanizing process for production—continuously passing cold-rolled, coiled strip steel through a galvanizing bath containing zinc, ultimately yielding galvanized strip steel.

  (2) Alloy-galvanized strip steel: The manufacturing process for alloy-galvanized strip steel also employs the hot-dip method. However, with this method, it is essential to immediately heat the steel to around 500℃ right after it is removed from the bath, which results in the formation of an alloy film composed of zinc and iron. Alloy-galvanized strip steel exhibits excellent adhesion.

  (3) Electro-galvanized strip steel: This type of galvanized strip steel, produced by electroplating, boasts excellent manufacturing performance. However, its hot-dip galvanized coating is thinner and its corrosion resistance is inferior to that of hot-dip galvanized sheets.

  (4) Hot-dip galvanized strip steel with single-sided and double-sided galvanization: Single-sided and double-sided galvanized strip steel—in short, refers to products in which only one side of the strip steel is hot-dip galvanized. In applications such as arc welding, spray painting, rust prevention treatments, and manufacturing processes, this type of strip steel exhibits greater adaptability compared to double-sided galvanized sheets. To address the drawback of having one side uncoated with zinc, the other side can be made into a thin-gauge zinc-coated sheet—resulting in what’s known as double-sided differential galvanized sheet.

  (5) Alloy and Composite Galvanized Steel Strips: These galvanized steel strips are made by combining metallic materials such as zinc and lead-zinc alloys. Such strips not only offer high-quality rust-prevention performance but also exhibit excellent paintability.

In addition to the five types of strip steel mentioned above, there are also colored galvanized strip steels and garment-printed galvanized strip steels. However, at present, hot-dip galvanized sheets remain the most commonly available on the market.

Due to the different production processes used in manufacturing galvanized strip steel, the surface conditions of the steel vary accordingly. Commonly used types include ordinary zinc flake, fine zinc flake, smooth zinc flake, non-zinc-flake, and strip steel with a phosphated surface. Galvanized strip steel should ideally have an excellent appearance; therefore, when purchasing, it is generally advisable to specify particular styles in the contract.
