U.S. cold-rolled strip steel and galvanized strip steel prices continue to rise.

In the first week of 2021, prices for cold-rolled and galvanized steel sheets in the U.S. surged, as customers seeking spot materials once again found that steel supplies were largely depleted across most regions. The new year marked the 22nd consecutive week of rising prices for hot-dip galvanized steel sheets.

On Thursday, January 7, Fastmarkets’ weekly price assessment for cold-rolled steel coils showed that the ex-factory price in the U.S. rose from $57.50 per hundredweight on December 31, 2020, to $58.50 per hundredweight ($1,170 per short ton). Since rebounding from its low of $31 per hundredweight in August 2020, this valuation has risen by 88.71% and now stands at its highest level since the peak of $62.25 per hundredweight in May 2008. On Thursday, Fastmarkets also revised its price assessment for hot-dip galvanized steel coils (based on cold-rolled stock), raising the ex-factory price from $58 per hundredweight a week earlier to $59 per hundredweight ($1,180 per ton).
