Annealing Process for Galvanized Strip Steel (Part 1)

The role of recrystallization annealing

The annealing furnace is a crucial piece of equipment used to alter the mechanical properties of cold-rolled strip steel. During the cold-rolling process, grain distortion and fragmentation occur in the strip steel, resulting in what is commonly referred to as work hardening. Products exhibiting this phenomenon are often called "cold-hardened sheets," which possess high strength but are nearly impossible to further deform or stretch, thus failing to meet users' application requirements. By heating, homogenizing, and cooling the cold-hardened sheets in an annealing furnace, their tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and other technical parameters can be brought into compliance with the performance specifications demanded by users.

Recrystallization annealing is a heat treatment process in which strip steel that has undergone cold plastic deformation is heated to a temperature above the recrystallization temperature but below the transformation temperature from ferrite to austenite, held at this temperature for a specified period, and then cooled. As the annealing heating temperature increases, the microstructure and properties of the steel plate undergo three distinct stages: recovery, recrystallization, and grain growth, ultimately completing the annealing process.

From a thermodynamic perspective, the microstructure within a cold-worked sheet is inherently unstable. Under appropriate driving conditions, it will release energy and transform into a more stable, lower-energy microstructure—thus relieving the intense internal stresses generated during cold rolling and restoring the equiaxed grain structure that existed before deformation. Furthermore, during annealing, whether structural changes occur at various stages depends on factors such as the purity of the steel plate material, the amount of strain experienced, the deformation temperature, and the annealing temperature. Some of these processes even take place during deformation itself; this phenomenon is known as dynamic recovery.
