Causes of Cracking in Galvanized Strip Steel

During the hot-dip galvanizing process of strip steel, the surface of the steel strip is prone to cracks and wrinkles of various shapes, which not only affect the appearance but also compromise its subsequent usability. The cracking on the guide rolls is caused by an imbalance between the diameter of the guide rolls and the thickness of the hot-rolled strip. These cracks form transversely across the surface of the strip at intervals of about 4–5 millimeters—particularly when the strip thickness is equal to or greater than 1.5 millimeters. To address this issue, it is generally advisable to select guide rolls with larger diameters based on the maximum thickness allowed by the equipment. The stretching and straightening cracks appear as faint slip lines; as the high-temperature strip passes through the stretching and straightening machine, cracks spaced approximately 2–3 millimeters apart develop in the transverse direction of the strip. This defect arises because the strip has not been sufficiently cooled when it enters the stretching and straightening machine. In production, this defect can be eliminated by carefully finishing the strip. At the same time, the temperature of the stretching and straightening machine should be strictly controlled to remain below 40°C. Coiling wrinkles are transverse folds that form on the surface of the strip and may extend across its entire width. In severe cases, these wrinkles can even be felt by hand and will adversely affect the strip's future use. When such defects occur, the stretching ratio and flatness should be appropriately increased.
