Method for Measuring the Thickness of Hot-Dip Galvanized Zinc Coating
Magnetic measurement method
Magnetic measurement is a non-destructive testing method conducted according to GB/T 4956. It involves using an electromagnetic thickness gauge to measure the thickness of the zinc coating. It’s worth noting here that cheaper devices may yield greater measurement errors. The price of electromagnetic thickness gauges ranges from several thousand to tens of thousands of yuan; therefore, we recommend using high-quality equipment for accurate measurements.
Weighing measurement method
The measurement by weighing shall be conducted in accordance with GB/T13825. The weighing method is the arbitration method. The coating weight of the galvanized layer determined by this method shall be converted into coating thickness based on the density of the coating (7.2 g/cm²). This method is a destructive testing method. In cases where the number of parts is fewer than 10, if the weighing method may involve damage to the parts and the resulting remedial costs are unacceptable to the buyer, the buyer should not insist on using the weighing method.
Anodic Dissolution Coulometry
Using a suitable electrolyte, the coating with a defined area is completely dissolved at the anode. The complete dissolution of the coating is determined by monitoring the change in the cell voltage. The thickness of the coating is calculated based on the amount of electric charge consumed during electrolysis (measured in coulombs). By correlating the time required for the coating to dissolve with the corresponding amount of charge consumed, the coating thickness can be accurately determined.
Cross-sectional microscopy measurement
The cross-sectional microscopy measurement method is a destructive testing technique that represents only a single point and is therefore not commonly used. It is conducted according to GB/T 6462. The principle involves cutting a specimen from the part under examination, mounting it, and then using appropriate techniques to grind, polish, and etch the cross section. The thickness of the coating’s cross section is subsequently measured using a calibrated scale.
